Manual Handling Train-the-Trainer
Train the Right Way. Train With Confidence. Train With Morgan Maxwell.
Our Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) approved manual handling train the trainer programme equips your people to deliver engaging, compliant, measurable training using your tasks and equipment—led by Chartered Ergonomists registered with (CIEHF).
Why Train the Trainer?
If you rely on external trainers or generic classroom sessions, coverage is slower and behaviour change is harder to sustain. Train-the-trainer builds internal capability so you can deliver training when you need it, across shifts, sites, and roles.
Your new trainers will be able to:
- Deliver consistent manual handling training across teams and sites
- Coach safe technique on the job and correct risky behaviours
- Use a simple risk framework to escalate higher-risk tasks
- Document training and competence for audits and due diligence
- Support measurable improvement through basic KPIs
Who It’s For
- Health & Safety leads and advisors
- Supervisors and team leaders
- L&D / internal trainers
- Occupational health and wellbeing teams
- CI / ergonomics champions

What your trainers will learn (outcomes)
By the end of the programme, trainers will be able to:
Plan and deliver site-specific sessions aligned to HSE guidance and MHOR (1992) principles
Teach and coach safe handling using the BELT method (Body, Environment, Load, Task)
Demonstrate and evaluate lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling and team handling
Assess learner competence, give feedback and keep clear training records
Reinforce safe behaviours on the job with simple coaching cues
The BELT Method (our coaching framework)
BELT gives trainers a simple, memorable structure for real-time coaching and risk awareness:
1
Body
posture, grip, capability, individual factors
2
Environment
space, surfaces, lighting, gradients, weather
3
Load
weight, size, stability, centre of mass, handles
4
Task
frequency, duration, reach distance, pace, team coordination
Course structure (2-stage competence-based format)
Pre-course discovery (included)
A short scoping call and optional task video review so the course reflects your tasks, loads, equipment and constraints.
Day 1 — On-site practical training (delegates)
- Manual handling risk: anatomy, biomechanics and MSD basics (practical and visual)
- BELT method for coaching and quick risk sense-checks
- MHOR/HSE essentials and what “good practice” looks like
- Task labs using your loads/equipment: lifting, carrying, push/pull, awkward loads, team handling
- On-the-job coaching: cues, error correction and safe demonstrations
- Preparing to teach: lesson plans, checklists and competence rubrics
Outcomes
- Delegates leave Day 1 ready to deliver a short site-specific session.
Day 2 — Teach-back assessment to verify competence
Delegates deliver a short training session back to a Chartered Ergonomist and are assessed against a trainer competence checklist:
- Technical accuracy (BELT, posture, force, repetition, environment)
- Coaching and demonstration quality
- Engagement, inclusion and communication
- Verification and record-keeping
Outcomes
- Competence verified and trainers cleared to deliver internal training.
(Delivery timing for Day 2 is agreed during scoping to suit your operations.)
Assessment & Certification
- Observed group teach-back with documented feedback and action points
- Morgan Maxwell Manual Handling Trainer Certificate (valid 2 years)
- Development pathway for anyone needing further practice (targeted coaching + re-assessment)
What’s Included
Trainer pack: lesson plans, checklists, assessment rubrics and editable materials
Learner workbook and certificates
Task-specific scenarios using your equipment and loads
30-day post-course support for new trainers (email)
