Ergonomic Workstation Assessment (Home & Office)

In-depth, one-to-one assessments delivered by Chartered Ergonomists for persistent discomfort and complex cases.

Specialist support at your desk

If you’re dealing with chronic back/neck pain, RSI or posture-related fatigue, a quick DSE check often isn’t enough. Our Ergonomic Workstation Assessment is a thorough, in-person session focused on real work, real posture and immediate, practical changes.

When This Assessment Is the Right Choice

An ergonomic workstation assessment is most appropriate when:

  • discomfort persists despite previous completion of a DSE Assessment.
  • symptoms affect concentration, attendance or performance
  • someone is returning to work after injury or absence
  • reasonable adjustments are required
  • home or hybrid working setups are poorly controlled
  • tasks involve long duration, constrained postures or multiple screens

This service is not a tick-box assessment. It is a detailed workplace ergonomics evaluation (not a medical diagnosis) designed to reduce risk and improve comfort and function.

What an Ergonomic Workstation Assessment Includes

Each assessment is carried out one-to-one by a Chartered Ergonomist and typically includes:

  • detailed review of the individual’s role, tasks and symptoms
  • observation of posture, movement and work habits
  • assessment of chair, desk, screens, input devices and layout
  • reach, height, visual and space constraints
  • lighting, glare and environmental factors
  • practical coaching during the session to improve setup and habits

Adjustments are made during the visit wherever possible.

How your assessment works

  1. Pre-assessment briefing
A short questionnaire and discussion to understand discomfort, history and priorities.
  2. In-person assessment (home or office)
Detailed observation of how the person actually works, not just how the workstation looks.
  3. Live adjustments and coaching
Immediate changes to setup and posture, plus guidance the individual can maintain.
  4. Personalised report
Clear, prioritised actions with setup guidance and equipment recommendations (only where justified).
  5. Optional follow-up
A short review once changes are embedded to fine-tune and confirm improvement

What’s included

  • One-to-one Ergonomic Workstation Assessment led by a CIEHF-registered Chartered Ergonomist
  • Immediate, tangible adjustments during the visit
  • Written report with photos/diagrams where helpful
  • Guidance on chairs, input devices, laptop stands, footrests and headsets (if needed)

FAQs: Ergonomic Workstation Assessment

What is an ergonomic workstation assessment?

It is a detailed, one-to-one assessment of how a person works at their desk, focusing on posture, equipment, layout and habits to reduce discomfort and risk.

How is this different from a DSE assessment?

A DSE assessment is a baseline compliance check. An ergonomic workstation assessment is more detailed and is designed for persistent discomfort or complex cases.

Who carries out the assessment?

All assessments are delivered by a Chartered Ergonomist registered with the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF).

Can assessments be done at home?

Yes. We regularly carry out ergonomic workstation assessments in home offices, as well as traditional office environments.

Will you recommend new equipment?

Only where it is genuinely needed. Many issues are resolved through setup changes, coaching and small adjustments rather than new furniture.

Is this a medical assessment?

No. We provide specialist ergonomics advice, not medical diagnosis. If clinical input is required, we will signpost appropriately.

Do you provide reports for HR or managers?

Yes. Reports are written clearly and can be shared with HR, H&S or Occupational Health where appropriate.

What if someone needs further support?

Optional follow-up reviews can be arranged to confirm improvements or refine recommendations.
